What’s Important To You?
Posted on 30. Mar, 2010 by Douglas Richardson in Tribe Syndication
I think that in many cases we can very easily remove ourselves to what is really important in our lives. For myself I can easily get involved in my Social Media activities and forget what is truly important to me. Things that I at first see as a distraction from what it is I am trying to do, actually are the things that are the most important part of my life. You know the old saying “You can’t take it with you”?
In many cases I believe that our quest for success or happiness can sometimes blend together, where we see our accomplishments as our success and that is not necessary so.
In our world today people that seem to have the most material wealth are the ones that people see as the most successful? We see wealth as happiness and some of the unhappiest people I have ever met were very wealthy. It is like that toy that you wanted so much when you were a child. When you first brought it home you were so happy and excited to have it. But after a short time it was thrown over in the corner with the other toy’s you needed so badly and you were looking for the next toy that was going to be “The One!”
Our world as we know it has been going through some very hard economic time in the last few years. Wall Street executives killing themselves over their lose of finances? But for others I think that there has been an awakening of where their priorities should be. They have come to the realization that having family and friends is much more important than material wealth. None let me say there is nothing wrong with having material wealth; we just need to remember what is truly important?
I was giving my wife a hug the other day and she said to me that, she “felt that she had lost me to my computer, and she missed me” Wow! now that is something to think about huh? I have been working very hard to build my Social Media presences on the internet and it appears not paying attention to the one I love. This I am sure is why this post is coming out of me; I need to get my items of importance in proper perspective. I need to rethink my priorities!
One of the benefits to working from home is just that you can work from home. So for me I can be doing something else and find myself back in my office working on the computer when I just walked out of the room to go to the bathroom, leaving my wife and daughter watching television? Even if that is all we were doing in my mind it is still important for me to have a presence in the room as part of the family. I think that I personally need to be aware of where my presences is needed and wanted; sometime all it takes is to just be there.
I remember when I was a boy; my mother would come to most of my sporting events. My father didn’t come to any of them, he was busy working and to “make money so I could do these things” Well I am 59 now and I still remember this just like it was yesterday. What I am saying here is that what seems important to you at the moment may really not be so?
What I have been doing is taking some time to reflect on what is important and putting it into perspective to others that our important to me. I really think as human beings we don’t do this, we just plow ahead with what we think has the most importance to us personally.
So that is it for today, I hope that you can take away something positive from this as I have just from writing my thoughts down. Please leave a comment; I would like your feedback.
Easter Sunday is coming up this weekend, so remember what has the most importance of all. God Bless
Sincerely, Douglas

Hi Doug,
Thank you for this post and yes it also brought things home for me. I have two young children and recently my youngest started day care a couple days a week for this exact reason. I really wanted to have my work time separate from my time with my family as it is too easy to mix them up when working from home. I think the way to deal with this problem is to come up with a schedule for oneself and commit to it. This way work time is work time and family time is strictly family time!
Thanks again and blessings!

Hi Doug,
Boy can I relate to some of the things you’ve shared here. There have been times when my wife has felt that the computer has taken priority over her. I have to remember to make it a point to designate my time properly and to allow the other things that are important in life too.

Doug,
Thanks for a great time on the Daily Crushers power hour last night! Best time I have had in a long time!
I really love your post… I can find it so easy to get lost in my computer as well. It is a hard thing when you are trying to build something of value you can actually leave behind for your family but really… what is more valuable than the great memories you leave behind from the precious time you spend with them.
But I like you, especially remember this weekend… The most important piece of the puzzle for me and that is remembering to put God first in all I do.
Thanks for the reminder..
Happy Easter,
Susan
